Welcome to Helsinki! Your first day eases you in with a compact, walkable loop through the city's historic core — perfect after a travel day. From the grand granite-and-glass Central Station (an Art Nouveau landmark in its own right), you'll drift toward the soaring white neoclassical cathedral crowning Senate Square, the city's most photographed spot. From there it's a short stroll down to the harbour-side bustle of Market Square, where stalls spill toward the water and ferries come and go. You'll cap the evening with dinner at the beautifully restored Old Market Hall, where Finnish flavors and a warm, low-key atmosphere make for a gentle introduction to the week ahead — tomorrow you dive into the Design District and your first seaside sauna.
Everything today is on foot and close together. Central Station to Senate Square is an easy 11-minute walk; Senate Square down to Market Square is just 6 minutes, and Market Square to the Old Market Hall is another 6. No transit needed. If you'd rather store bags before exploring, lockers are available at Central Station. The whole loop is flat and step-friendly along the harbour.
Enjoy your first evening — get some rest and let the long northern daylight ease you into the trip.

After yesterday's central loop and the airy modern lines of Oodi, today shifts north into leafy Töölö — a graceful neighborhood that pairs architectural drama with green calm. You'll start underground (sort of) at Temppeliaukio Rock Church, an extraordinary 1969 sanctuary blasted straight into living granite and topped with a copper dome — a space where light, stone, and acoustics do all the talking. From there it's a short walk to the steel-pipe sweep of the Sibelius Monument, an abstract tribute to Finland's great composer set in a seaside park. The day winds down with an easy stroll along Töölönlahti Bay, where waterside paths, reeds, and skyline views make for an unhurried afternoon. It's a lighter, design-and-nature day — perfect after several busy ones.
Everything today is walkable. It's about a 14-minute walk from the Rock Church to the Sibelius Monument, then roughly 19 minutes from the monument down to Töölönlahti Bay. All routes are flat and step-free along paved paths and park lanes. If you'd rather skip a leg, trams 2 and 4 thread through Töölö and connect easily back toward the center.
